Chapter 12

Kyra spritzed herself with amber and sandalwood body spray, glancing up at the clock nervously as she readied herself for her date with Colton. Once again, Cat had allowed her to leave work early, effectively taking over the final preparations for tomorrow’s big party. She felt guilty. The New Year’s bash had been her idea, and it didn’t look good that she hadn’t been there much the last few days.

Although, she was looking forward to spending an evening with Colton without any interruptions. As she showered and dressed in her softest winter turtleneck, the anticipation of where things might go with him sent a series of tingles coursing directly to her nether lips. First-time sex with a good-looking FBI guy? She’d take that over work any day.

She glanced in the mirror. What is it that turned Colton’s eyes into molten gold every time he looked at her? No man had ever made Kyra feel so wanted. Despite her earlier rant, Kyra cared about Colton, and she hadn’t meant to hurt him. Hopefully, her plan didn’t backfire. As promised, Cat said she left an invitation for Colton at her cabin, and he got it. Now, it was all up to him. Kyra took a deep breath, her nerves returning as a horrible thought suddenly came to mind—what if he didn’t come?

Her entire conversation with Cat had been running through her mind since she left the chalet. More than concerned about Cat’s insights into Pete’s disturbing behavior, Never in her wildest dreams would she have thought that her best friend from college, a man she’d known for ten years, was just as controlling as her ex. Kyra decided to take Cat’s advice. Pete didn’t have her best interests at heart anymore, and she needed to confide in a man she could trust. Over the last week, Colton had given her more than enough reason to have faith in him.

Making her way back to the kitchen, Kyra took the rice and shrimp mixture out of the microwave and set the table. She hadn’t made this particular recipe before, so she hoped Colton wasn’t allergic to shellfish. At five until seven, the doorbell rang. Her heart raced. Well, that answers my question...now hopefully I won’t screw this up.

Throwing her potholder aside, Kyra went to the door and peeked out the transom. She stared at Colton as he stood on her porch, his hair damp. He must have just gotten out of the shower. Kyra took a deep breath, a conflagration of desire charring her from the inside out, .and she swung the door wide.

He gave her a lopsided grin. “I’m here. 7:00 PM, just like it says.”

As he held up a fancy, hand-made invitation, in complete cupid style with an old Valentine’s doily and several inlaid, paper hearts glued to the front of pink construction paper, Kyra groaned in embarrassment. She was going to kill Cat! She gave him a shy smile. “I’m glad you came.”

Stepping inside, Colton handed her his coat, removing his boots on the tiled floor.
